Most squat programming relies heavily on similar stance widths and movement patterns. A sumo stance gives your adductors and hips a different loading pattern without replacing your regular squat.

Adductors (Adductor Magnus, Longus, Brevis)

How to Sumo Squat With Correct Form

1. Set Your Stance Width and Toe Angle First

Your stance width and toe angle are key parts of a sumo squat setup, not the depth or the bar you're using. They should work with your hip position and knee path so you can control the wider stance through the full rep.

What it looks like when it's wrong: your stance is wide but your toes point mostly forward, which can make it harder to keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your feet.

How to set it:

  1. Start with feet roughly 1.5-2x shoulder width, adjust from there based on your hip mobility.
  2. Turn your toes out 30-45 degrees. Your knees should track directly over them through the whole rep.
  3. If your knees can't stay stacked over your toes at your working stance, narrow it slightly. A sumo squat you can't control isn't building anything.

2. Keep Your Torso Controlled and Balanced

Some lifters find it easier to stay upright in a wider stance, but torso angle still depends on your anatomy, bar position, depth, and stance. The goal is not to force a perfectly vertical torso. It's to stay braced and balanced over your midfoot.

What it looks like when it's wrong: your torso tips forward enough that the rep turns into a hinge, or you force yourself so upright that you lose balance.

How to fix it: brace hard, keep your chest controlled, and think about sitting between your legs while maintaining pressure through your full foot.

3. Track Your Knees Out, Not Just Down

Your knees need to travel in the same direction as your toes throughout the entire rep, not just at the bottom.

What it looks like when it's wrong: knees stay aligned at the top of the rep but drift inward on the way down or the drive up, especially as fatigue sets in on later sets.

How to fix it: keep your knees tracking over your toes through the descent and ascent. If they start drifting inward, narrow your stance or reduce the load until you can control the pattern. If you've used a resistance band for knee tracking cues on regular squats, the same drill works here.

4. Drive Through the Full Foot, Not Just the Heels

A wide, toes-out stance changes your base of support. Rooting through your heels alone will tip you backward or forward depending on your mobility.

How to fix it: distribute pressure across your whole foot, with slightly more weight through the heel and midfoot as you drive up. Think tripod foot, same as any heavy squat.

5. Brace Before You Descend, Not During

A wide stance still puts real compressive load through your spine and hips. Bracing after you've already started the descent means your first few inches of the rep happen unsupported.

How to fix it: take your breath and set your 360-degree brace at the top, before the bar or your body starts moving.
